Methodology

How these numbers are compiled, figure by figure.

Of the 14 headline figures on this site, 4 reconcile cleanly against an authoritative source, 6 are indicative, and 4 are genuinely disputed between reputable sources. This page says which is which.

Why this page exists

Football statistics are not as settled as a comparison site makes them look. Goal totals are solid, because every goal is a reported event with a match report behind it. Assists are not: no governing body publishes a lifetime assist total for Cristiano Ronaldo, and independent trackers disagree by 46 assists. Hat-trick counts are not. Body-part splits are not. A site that prints all of those as flat integers is telling you something it does not know.

So every headline figure below carries its source, how much weight it can take, the spread across sources where one exists, and what would settle it. Where a figure is marked indicative or disputed, the page that publishes it says so beside the number as well.

What counts

  • All statistics are senior, official, first-team. No youth or reserve football, no testimonials, no unofficial friendlies.
  • Goals include senior club competitive matches, senior international competitive matches, and recognised continental club competition.
  • Penalties scored in normal or extra time count as goals. Penalty shootout kicks do not — they are recorded separately on the penalties page.
  • Trophies count senior team honours won while the player was at the club. The trophy table is kept at competition level, so it does not record which individual matches a player appeared in.
  • Individual awards include only those given by FIFA, UEFA, France Football or a comparable body.
  • A head-to-head meeting requires that both players took the field. A fixture between their clubs in which one did not play is not a meeting, and the head-to-head page marks one such match explicitly rather than quietly counting it.

What the three labels mean

Disputed

Reputable sources give materially different answers. Quote it with the spread attached.

4 of 14 figures

Indicative

Close, and the best figure available, but it does not fully reconcile or it rests on rounded data.

6 of 14 figures

Solid

Reconciles against an authoritative source and against this site's own itemised tables.

Every headline figure, with its provenance

Ordered worst-documented first, because those are the ones worth reading before quoting anything from this site.

Ronaldo career assists 291

Disputed
Source:
A hand-compiled match-by-match log using the same senior-official scope as the rest of this site. No governing body publishes a lifetime assist total for him.
Where sources differ:
Independent trackers range from 261 to 307 — a spread of 46 assists. Our own club rows plus international assists come to 301, ten more than the published figure.
What would settle it:
A match-level assist source for Ronaldo with a stated methodology. Until then, treat the number as approximate.

Messi total team trophies 45

Disputed
Source:
The sum of this site's own itemised ten-row trophy table, which a build gate enforces.
Where sources differ:
Other sources publish 44 (senior honours only), 46 (including youth honours) and 48 (scope not stated). The disagreement turns on whether the MLS Supporters' Shield, Community Shield-equivalents and the Arab Club Champions Cup count as major honours.
What would settle it:
Reconciling our ten rows line by line against another published list to find the single disputed honour.

Career hat-tricks 57 and 68

Disputed
Source:
Compiled match by match on this site's senior-official scope. No governing body publishes a career hat-trick total.
Where sources differ:
Another well-known tracker publishes 62 and 66 — disagreeing with us in opposite directions for the two players, which is the clearest sign that nobody's figure here is authoritative.
What would settle it:
A published, match-referenced hat-trick log from either player's federation or club.

International assists 65 and 47

Disputed
Source:
Messi's figure is from Wikipedia's list of his career achievements. Ronaldo's has no equivalently authoritative source.
Where sources differ:
Assists were not officially recorded for much of Ronaldo's early international career, so his figure is an estimate rather than a count.
What would settle it:
A federation-published assist record for Portugal.

/international

Messi career assists 424

Indicative
Source:
Wikipedia states this as the most official recorded assists in football history.
Where sources differ:
Some sites publish 463 by counting secondary assists, which this site does not. Adding our own club rows to his international assists gives 433 — nine above what we publish.
What would settle it:
Per-match assist data with a stated scope, which would let the club-by-club rows and the career total be reconciled rather than left to coexist.

Career appearances 1,175 and 1,337

Indicative
Source:
Wikipedia's career-achievements lists for both players.
Where sources differ:
Messi's figure reconciles exactly against our club rows plus caps. Ronaldo's does not: our rows sum to 1,338 against the published 1,337, a difference of one appearance we have not located.
What would settle it:
Finding the single over-counted match in the six Ronaldo club rows, or adopting our own 1,338.

Goals by body part and set piece left foot, right foot, headers, free kicks

Indicative
Source:
Aggregated from match data and rounded to the nearest five, which is why the figures end in 0 or 5.
Where sources differ:
These are not published by any governing body and available compilations differ. They are shown to compare footedness, not to be added up against the career total.
What would settle it:
A per-goal dataset with body-part attribution for both full careers.
Published on:
/goals

Messi World Cup knockout goals 8

Indicative
Source:
The last fully verified total, which predates the 2026 World Cup.
Where sources differ:
His eight goals at the 2026 tournament are not yet split by stage: three are firmly established as group-stage, and no outlet found published a stage-by-stage breakdown of the rest. His overall World Cup goals figure does include 2026, so the two rows cover different periods.
What would settle it:
A match-by-match log of his 2026 World Cup goals.

/world-cup

Goals per calendar year the year-by-year table

Indicative
Source:
Compiled per calendar year and used to generate the per-year pages.
Where sources differ:
The table does not sum to the career totals: it is ten short for Messi and fifteen over for Ronaldo, and Ronaldo's table omits his 2002–04 goals entirely while still exceeding his career total. The per-year figures are therefore reliable for comparing one year against another and should not be added up.
What would settle it:
Rebuilding the table from per-fixture dates rather than per-year aggregates.
Published on:
/goals, /goals/by-year

Head-to-head meetings 35

Indicative
Source:
A compiled ledger of matches in which both players took the field. The selected matches shown on the head-to-head page each carry the match report checked against them.
Where sources differ:
One previously published meeting — a February 2025 Al Nassr v Inter Miami friendly — does not exist; the real fixture was February 2024 and Ronaldo did not play in it, so it is excluded and the total fell from 36 to 35. The remaining 35 rows have not each been re-verified against a primary source.
What would settle it:
A row-by-row re-check of the full ledger against match reports.

Messi career goals 929

Solid
Source:
Wikipedia's list of career achievements, cross-checked against Inter Miami's own announcement of his 100th club goal (16 September 2026). Reconciles exactly against this site's itemised club-by-club table plus international goals.

Ronaldo career goals 979

Solid
Source:
Wikipedia's list of career achievements, cross-checked against reporting of his 979th career goal (10 September 2026). Reconciles exactly against the itemised club table plus international goals.

The sum of this site's itemised trophy table, which matches the most commonly published senior figure.

How often this changes

Goals, assists and appearances come from an automated snapshot. The date shown across the site — — is the timestamp of that snapshot, and nothing else. It is not the date of a full manual re-check, and it does not cover trophy or award counts, which are maintained by hand and change only when a competition is decided.

Refreshes are run manually, and the interval between them has been weeks rather than days. The date is always the real one, so if it looks old, it is. The changelog records what changed and when, and a build gate refuses to publish the site at all if the snapshot is more than sixteen days old, so a dead refresh pipeline cannot hide behind a healthy-looking date.
