Changelog

What changed on this Messi vs Ronaldo site, and when.

Every meaningful refresh of the data and every notable improvement to the site. Most-recent first.

  1. Data

Career totals reconciled against independent sources

Every headline figure was re-verified against at least three independent authorities and corrected to the published consensus. Messi: 929 goals (was 919), 424 assists (was 416), 1,175 appearances (was 1,112). Ronaldo: 979 goals (was 975), 291 assists (was 280), 1,337 appearances (was 1,291). Sources: the Wikipedia career-achievements articles for both players, contemporaneous match reporting of Messi's 100th Inter Miami goal (2026-09-16) and Ronaldo's 979th (2026-09-10), Inter Miami CF's own milestone announcement, and ronaldostats.app's hand-compiled match log. Two club stints that had been frozen since June were updated at source — Messi at Inter Miami (100 goals in 115 games, was 56 in 78) and Ronaldo at Al Nassr (132 in 156, was 96 in 110) — which is where most of the appearance shortfall came from. The /international page was also showing 192 and 226 caps in its summary card while its own table showed the correct 207 and 233; every caps figure on the site now reads from one source. The visible "Updated" date is now derived from the data snapshot itself rather than typed in by hand, and the build refuses to run on a snapshot older than the staleness guard.

  2. Data

    2026 World Cup added

Full 2026 World Cup update: career goal, assist and appearance totals refreshed from the live feed; the tournament added to the World Cup and international tables; the Spain 1–0 Argentina final recorded; and new timeline moments, all-time records and FAQ answers. Messi reached the final (8 goals, 4 assists) while Ronaldo's Portugal exited in the round of 16 — both players' last World Cup.

  3. Site

Site relaunch with full Messi vs Ronaldo coverage

Fresh design, 20 dedicated pages, an interactive stat comparator, a Ballon d'Or year-by-year table and dynamic per-page OG images.

  4. Data

Career totals refreshed through April 2026

Goal, assist and appearance counts updated for the 2025–26 season run-ins at Inter Miami and Al Nassr. Hat-trick + free-kick splits also revised.

  5. Feature

    Per-page Open Graph images

Each major page now generates its own dynamic OG card so social shares preview with the right numbers instead of a generic brand image.

  6. Data

    2024 Ballon d'Or added

Rodri's 2024 Ballon d'Or win added to the year-by-year table. Neither Messi nor Ronaldo on the 30-man shortlist that year.

  7. Data

    Career goal totals after 900

Ronaldo's career goal total updated past the 900-goal milestone reached on September 5, 2024. Messi total adjusted for the Copa America 2024 run.

  8. Feature

Records page expanded to 35 entries

Records reorganised into six categories: Goals, Competitions, Awards, International, Single season and Longevity. Each gets its own section with anchors.

  9. Data

    Copa America 2024 added

Messi's second consecutive Copa America title (his seventh major senior international trophy) reflected across International, Trophies and Timeline.

  10. Data

    Eighth Ballon d'Or for Messi

Following the 2022 World Cup win, Messi's record-extending eighth Ballon d'Or added to the Ballon d'Or page and the all-time records list.

What you can do is check whether the figure is one this site already records as uncertain. The methodology page lists every headline figure with its source, marks the disputed ones, and gives the spread across sources where they disagree. Corrections that do get made are recorded as a dated entry above.
