An independent reference for the most famous comparison in football — written for people who want the numbers, not the take.
Why this site exists
Searching "Messi vs Ronaldo" in 2026 mostly turns up two things: viral arguments and dense Wikipedia tables that aren't designed to be compared. Our goal here is the opposite — a single, current, well-organised place where each major angle of the comparison has its own page, with charts that show the gap rather than just citing it. If you came here to settle a debate, you'll probably leave with more nuance. That's on purpose.
Methodology
Reference sources, consulted by hand: the Wikipedia career-achievements articles for both players, Transfermarkt, FBref, the RSSSF archive, and published FIFA and UEFA match reports for individual matches. The only source this site queries programmatically is API-Football, which supplies the recent-match deltas behind the “updated” date — it does not supply trophy or award counts, which are maintained by hand. Where sources disagree, we normally take the most widely cited figure, and where we do not, the page that publishes the number says so and gives the range. All stats are senior, official, first-team — we do not count youth, reserve, testimonial or unofficial friendly matches.
- Goals include senior club competitive, senior international competitive and recognised continental club competition.
- Penalties scored in regulation count as goals. Penalty shootouts do not.
- Trophies count senior team honours won while the player was at the club. Our trophy table is kept at competition level, so it does not record which individual matches a player appeared in.
- Individual awards include only those given by FIFA, UEFA, France Football, or another comparable body.

That date is the timestamp of the most recent automated data snapshot, which covers goals, assists and appearances. It is not the date of a full manual re-check of every figure, and it does not cover trophy or award counts, which are maintained by hand and change only when a competition is decided. The headline figures on that snapshot: Messi: 929 goals, 424 assists, 1,175 appearances. Ronaldo: 979 goals, 291 assists, 1,337appearances. The goal and appearance figures come from the Wikipedia career-achievements articles for both players, cross-checked against contemporaneous reporting of the two most recent milestones — Messi’s 100th Inter Miami goal on 16 September 2026 and Ronaldo’s 979th career goal on 10 September 2026. The goal figures also reconcile exactly against each player’s itemised club-by-club record on this site. The assist and appearance columns do not: the club-by-club rows sum to a different figure, by nine and ten assists respectively and by one Ronaldo appearance. Each player’s own page states that gap beside the table rather than hiding it.
One figure is weaker than the others and we would rather say so than hide it: no governing body publishes a lifetime assist total for Ronaldo, and independent trackers range from 261 to 307. We publish 291, the figure from a hand-compiled match-by-match log using the same senior-official scope as the rest of this site. Messi’s 424is the “official recorded” figure; some sites publish 463 for him by counting secondary assists, which we do not.

The only source this site queries automatically. It supplies the recent-match goal, assist and appearance deltas behind the “updated” date at the foot of every page. It does not supply trophy counts, award counts or any of the historical tables, all of which are maintained by hand.

The site was last updated on . The intention is to refresh career totals after meaningful competitive matches and to update trophy and award counts after a final or a ceremony. Refreshes are run manually and the interval between them has been weeks rather than days; the date above is always the real one, so if it looks old, it is.
Corrections
This page used to give an email address for corrections. It has been removed because it was not a mailbox anyone monitored, and an address that swallows a correction is worse than none. There is currently no way to report an error to this site, which is stated plainly on the contact page rather than left for you to discover.
What is available instead: the methodology page lists every headline figure with its source and marks the ones that are genuinely disputed, with the range across sources — so a number that looks wrong can often be checked without asking anybody. The changelog records what changed and when.
